Russia Humble Saudi Arabia 5-0 In World Cup Opening Match

Hosts, Russia humbled Saudi Arabia 5-0 to get up to a spectacular start in the opening match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Expectedly, the Moscow Stadium was filled to capacity as the Russians trooped out enmasse to savour world cup moments, and the players didn’t disappoint any of them at all as they put up a dominant and ruthless display to dispatch Saudi Arabia who had no single shot on target all through the match.

Garzinskiy opened the scoring with a glancing header in the 12th minute, before substitute Denis Cheryshev added the second with a beautiful solo effort to give Russia a 2-0 lead in the first half.

Subsequently, the second half began almost the way the first half ended as the Russians dominated possession with the Saudi Arabians struggling to contain the hosts.

Piling much more pressure with a ruthless attacking line, Artem Dzyuba scored for the Russians again  after coming off the bench as a super sub to give Russia a 3-0 lead before Cheryshev added his second of the match and Golovin rounded it up with a beautiful free kick to ensure the Saudi Arabians were totally silenced by the hosts.

Saudi Arabia however failed to record a single shot on target in the entire 90 minute encounter which had the Russian president Vladimir Putin and FIFA President Giovanni Infantino both in attendance.
