TRAGEDY: Heavy downpour, flooding wreck havoc in Ogun, kill two, many homeless

Residents in major cities and towns in Ogun State, especially its capital Abeokuta yesterday were greeted by a heavy downpour and flood in the late hours of Thursday evening, destroying properties worth millions of naira while rendering many homeless and hopeless.

The heavy downpour which started at about 4:30pm fell unceasingly till the later part of the night and caused unimaginable havoc to most residents and traders in and and around the state capital, leaving them to count their losses.

Some of the areas affected include Kuto-isabo bridge, Oke Sokori, Lafenwa, Kuto, MKO Abiola stadium fence, many houses in Amolaso, Totoro, Iyana mortuary, Ago ijesha, Grammar school, Itoku amongst other parts of city.

Several vehicles and houses were trapped and submerged with no clear way to be rescued while the heavy flood lasted, causing both vehicular and human traffic.

NEWS FLAKES NG also gathered that some other parts of the state were also affected by the heavy rainfall and flooding including Ota, Atan, Sagamu, Ogijo, Ijebu ode, Ago Iwoye amongst other areas.

However, some of the residents who spoke to our correspondent lamented about their losses while pleading with the state government and other well meaning individuals to urgently come to their aid as the persistent problem of heavy flooding in the state was becoming too worrisome, thus requiring drastic measures to forestall future recurrence.

Another eye witness account has it that two unidentified siblings as at the time of filing this report drowned and died in the heavy flooding along Nawarudeen-Isabo area as their bodies laid helplessly on the floor after late discovery by some neighbours and passers-by who managed to take out the bodies from the flood.

Many properties of the residents including buildings, shops, market wares etc were all affected by the heavy thunderstorm and flooding including some government properties such as electric power poles and mini transformers were seen falling across the road as noticeable in the Ijeun titun area, Oke – sokori, Super foods areas but to mention a few.

Meanwhile, It will be recalled that just few days ago, three individuals were reportedly strucked by heavy thunderstorms and died instantly along Obatonko road after a heavy downpour.
