Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday, endorsed the Ogun State governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Prince Gboyega Isiaka, as the next governor of the state.

Obasanjo, who described Isiaka as a good, credible and worthy candidate, stated that he believed in him to succeed incumbent governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, in 2019.

He also canvassed support for the aspiration of Ogun West Senatorial District, comprising Yewa- Awori people, to produce the state governor for the first time.

He spoke when the state’s ADC leadership formally presented Isiaka and his running mate, Mrs. Olabisi Okeowo-Bolade, to him at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Li-brary (OOPL), Abeokuta. The party Chairman, Dr. Gbolade Osinowo, also presented the ADC’s candidates for Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly to the ex-president.

In his remarks, Obasanjo described the race for 2019 in the Gateway State as a peculiar situation, urging the electorate to be discerning and fair in evaluating candidates for the elections. The former president noted that for the forthcoming governorship, the Ogun West zone must be allowed to produce governor in the spirit of equity, fairness and justice.

According to him, the two other senatorial districts, Ogun East and Ogun Central, have twice produced governor in the state. While throwing his weight behind Isiaka, who had contested the governorship twice, Obasanjo said he remained the only candidate worthy of the exalted seat of governor among those jostling for the position.

He said, “I am happy that today, you are presenting to me a candidate of the party and a candidate who is worthy of being a candidate. What do you expect me to say if not to say this is my son in whom I am well pleased. He is a man who has ears and he listens.

When he gets there, he will be grateful.”

The ex-president condemned vote-buying during elections, warning ADC candidates and members against such practice in order to differentiate themselves from corrupt politicians.
