OGUN – Three secondary school students were feared killed on Monday as operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) chased suspected smugglers in Ogun State.
Several others, including market women, were injured in the incident which reportedly happened about 2:00pm.
The victims were identified as students of Ojumo Community High School, Ihunbo in Ipokia Local Government Area of the state.
New Telegraph learnt that a second-hand vehicle being driven by a Customs operative lost control and crushed the students who were standing by the roadside after closing from school.
Our correspondent learnt that the vehicle was earlier seized from some suspected smugglers along Idiroko road.
The tragedy ignited tension in the town as aggrieved youths of the community set the vehicle on fire while the Customs men escaped from the scene.
When contacted, the Customs spokesman in the state, Abdullahi Maiwada, said the unfortunate incident was an accident.
Maiwada, however, stated that only one person died in the incident while two others were hospitalised.
