CALABAR - Cross River State COVID-19 Response Taskforce has vowed to enforce the No Facemask, No Movement Order in the state ahead of the local government polls scheduled to come up this weekend as part of measures to ensure that the state maintained her COVID19 - free status. 

 

The Chairman and Commissioner for Health, Dr Betta Edu made this declaration while reacting to claims that the State Government have defaulted and erred in conducting the LGA elections. 

 

Speaking during the visit of Abi Local Government Chapter of PDP to brief her on preparation for the weekend poll, Dr Betta Edu used the opportunity to assure Cross Riverians that every preventive measure and step will be adopted at various polling unit to ensure that physical distancing, use of hand sanitizers and wearing of face masks are adhered to before voting is observed.

 

"We do not want crowd and no one should congregate", she added. 

 

Edu called on the CROSEC to inform eligible voters from the Local Government and even beyond coming out to exercise their constitutional mandate to come out with their nose masks.

 

NEWS FLAKES NG reports that part of the criteria as agreed with CROSIEC, according to Edu, is the wearing of face masks, two meters spacing for every eligible voters and use of alcohol base sanitizers at every polling units. 

 

"I am using this opportunity to extend this message to Cross Riverians coming out to vote this weekend to do so with their face masks or get face mask which will be provided at some units so as to quickly carry out your accreditation process and voting without any hassle this is inline with INEC and CROSIEC protocols on conduct of the Elections this period.

 

"We have produced thousands of face masks and hand sanitizers to be distributed by CROSIEC for onward distribution alongside elections materials to electoral officers. The State Ministry of Health with collaboration with Cross River Sate Primary Healthcare Agency and our front line health workers have nominated health workers in every wards to mount each polling units and ensure this protocols have been diligently observe". 

 

The chairman went further to state that security agents have also been briefed as they will work alongside with the health officials that will mount each polling units to ensure adherence.

Recall that NEWS FLAKES NG reported earlier that Cross River State remains the only state in Nigeria as of today yet to record any single case of coronavirus.

 

Kogi, the other of the two COVID19 - free states in Nigeria yesterday after so much drama and controversies, finally recorded its first two index cases of the virus following latest updates from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, as of late Wednesday night May 27, 2020 which reported 389 fresh cases of the virus bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 8,733.
