ABEOKUTA - Ogun State Government amidst criticism about the relief packages being distributed to cushion the effect of covid-19 lockdown has warned saboteurs of the process of dire consequences while revealing the content of the relief packages.

The government disclosed that each of the relief bag where it has been distributed contained 5kg of Rice, 5kg of Beans, 5kg of Garri, Sachets of Tomato sauce, Sachets of Groundnut oil, Noodles, Pasta and Spices (Cubes & Others).

The government who made this clarification in a statement issued by the Governor Chief Press Officer, Kunle Somorin expressed worry at the misgiving and misconception that greeted the distribution of the relief packages to households, especially by elements that play politics with people’s lives.

Mr. Kunle Somorin, said government acknowledged that, distribution of such unprecedented quantum of relief packages could not have proceeded without initial logistical issues, noting that government was determined to surmount the attendant challenges.

“Social media have been awashed with many videos and still images, alleging that the package being distributed is one bag per street or CDA. This is untrue and deliberately spread in a bad light.

“In some of the locations where the alleged one bag per street sharing took place, Ogun State Government is yet to commence the distribution of these stimulus packages”, Somorin clarified.

The release maintained that 100,000 of such households are to be covered in the first tranche of the targeted 500,000 households, warning that any person in the relief distribution effort found wanting or corrupting the process, would be severely sanctioned by the government.

It implored all Community Development Associations, Community Development Councils and other stakeholders to cooperate with government officials involved in this relief effort, as everybody, especially the poor and the vulnerable, would be reached.

The release added that while government recognize and appreciate the roles of individuals, private organisations and institutions in providing the relief packages, it urged that the distribution be carried out in an orderly manner by obeying the rules, especially social distancing.

“Distribution of palliatives by private concerns should not in any way compromise the health of the beneficiaries, such should not be misconstrued as coming from the State Government”, it advised.

The release assured that Ogun State Government would continue to place premium on the health, welfare and wellbeing of its residents, to ameliorate the present pains and sacrifices.

Many communities had through videos condemned the state government relief package.

For instance, in Yewa South Local Government Area of the state, where the packages have been distributed, CDAs said two packages were given to them for distribution to the vulnerable people as directed by the government.
