OGUN - Residents of Abeokuta metropolis groaned in pains yesterday as they continue to battle effects of heavy flooding due to ceaseless torrential downpour in recent times.

Major parts of Abeokuta yesterday witnessed massive destruction of some houses, make-shift shops, major roads as well as other valuables of residents, leaving them lamenting helplessly.

Independent investigations conducted by NEWS FLAKES NG around some of the affected areas earlier this morning showed unimaginable level of damage caused by yesterday's torrential rainfall which left many stranded and many vehicles stuck in heavy traffic late into the nights.

The rain left some roads linking major streets and towns heavily flooded and unmotorable such as Opako-Adigbe bridge, Mercy hospital road, Quarry, Oke - Ilewo/Iwe Iroyin road, Oluwo township as well as other parts of the town suffering similar fate.

NEWS FLAKES NG observed that while some had to abandon their private vehicles to trek to their homes late last night, some had to accept their fate and passed the night inside their vehicles, only to find their way home early this morning when the flooded streets and rains had subsided.

Unfortunately, a woman and her child were said to have been washed away by the heavy floods around Oluwo-Adigbe area during the heavy downpour.

Meanwhile, in a recent video shared online, an obviously disappointed resident could be heard lamenting about the level of damage done to the Opako - Adigbe bridge which totally collapsed as a result of yesterday's torrential rainfall.

The resident blamed the Prince Dapo Abiodun - led administration which allegedly contracted the project to "fake" contractors who recently constructed the bridge linking Panseke-Adigbe/Saraki to Opako area enroute Lagos, which according to him, is only less than six months old.

He also took a swipe at critics of the immediate past Ibukunle Amosun - led administration which took to massive road construction and urban renewal while comparing the quality of policy implementation especially in the quality of roads construction to that of the present administration in the state.

Meanwhile, residents who spoke exclusively with NEWS FLAKES NG called on the Dapo Abiodun - led administration to urgently come to their aid especially in repairs of the major roads connecting major streets and communities of the state which have been badly damaged by heavy flooding in recent times.

Others appealed for the construction of more drainages and water channels as they expressed fears that the worse may be yet to come especially as the rainy season bites harder across the country.
